In una cittadina di provincia americana, inizia improvvisamente un'atroce serie di delitti, che tra gli abitanti del posto sparge una vera e propria psicosi del mostro. La polizia non riesce a scoprire nulla: si organizza anche una "battuta" in piena regola, che però si risolve tragicamente con altri quattro morti. L'unico che - prima per immaginazione, poi con certezza - capisce che il folle deve essere un "lupo mannaro" è il piccolo Marty Coslaw, un undicenne handicappato che una sera si trova faccia a faccia col mostro, riuscendo a ferirlo ad un occhio. La prima a raccogliere le confidenze di Marty, è sua sorella maggiore, Jane (da sempre gelosa del fratello, troppo "coccolato", a suo parere, dai genitori), la quale gli crede.
