Bastian è un ragazzino tormentato dai suoi compagni di scuola. Nel tentativo di sfuggire ai suoi amici, finisce in una libreria il cui proprietario gli mostra un antico libro. Bastian "prende in prestito" il libro e si rifugia nella soffitta della scuola per leggerlo. Finisce così risucchiato nella storia e nel mondo incantato di Fantasia, che è alla disperata ricerca di un eroe che lo salvi dalla distruzione.
